On the highway and going up hills at higher speeds it was very noticeable every time it shifted. Going up hills at 70+ that thing was turning 3 - 4 k rpms. Best I ever got was 23mpg on the flat interstates of Ohio. On the hills of I77 in VA and NC I got 19 - 20. Webb18 jan. 2013 · I had the exact problem with a Mazda. it turned out to be a VVT issue. it will eventually start blowing an engine code. I took it to the dealer and they of course could not duplicate the issue. Thankfully, it has a long enough warranty to cover it when it happens on every start. It will get to that point. I recently traded my 2011 RT due to the Timing Chain recall, MDS and noisy lifters on cold starts. Although my 3.6 runs great, I can't help but wonder if I will eventually have issues with the heads.
